Beer Cocktails to Help You Cool Off This Summer

When the temperature spikes in the summer, there is almost nothing better than an ice cold beer (no, not Coors) to cool you off. Sometimes, though, you might want to mix it up a bit and try out something a bit different without giving up that refreshment. No! Not Mike’s Hard Lemonade! Stay with me. I am talking about beer cocktails.

Let’s take a look at a couple of the base beer cocktails that you can enjoy during the hot summer months:

The first is the Shandy, a popular choice that will taste absolutely refreshing. The shandy traditionally is just a mix of beer and lemonade, but here’s a fancier version from Epicurious.

1 cup sugar
3 cups water
four 3-inch strips lemon zest, removed with a vegetable peeler
1 cup fresh lemon juice
2 fresh mint sprigs
chilled beer, such as pale ale

In a small saucepan bring sugar and 1 cup water to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved, and stir in zest. Cool sugar syrup to room temperature.

Transfer syrup to a small pitcher and stir in remaining 2 cups water, lemon juice, and mint. Chill lemonade until cold. (Makes about 4 1/2 cups lemonade.)

Pour 1/4 cup lemonade, or to taste, into each of 4 chilled beer glasses and top off with beer.

Next, we will look at the Happy Mich. Whipping up this cocktail will definitely make it seem like you know what you are doing behind the bar, and will keep your guests refreshed on a hot day.

1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon plus 1 pinch Pico Piquin seasoning (see chef’s notes, below)
1 lime wedge
2 2-by-2-inch cubes watermelon plus 1 slice for garnish
1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) freshly squeezed lime juice
1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) hibiscus concentrate (see chef’s notes, below)
2 dashes hot sauce, such as Tabasco
2 dashes Tajin regular snack sauce (see chef’s notes, below)
About 2 cups ice cubes
About 6 ounces lager, such as Dos Equis

In small saucer, stir together salt and 1 teaspoon Pico Piquin. Rub lime wedge around rim of pilsner glass (12 or 16 ounces). Invert glass and dip part of rim into salt mixture, coating outside of glass only. Rotate to coat halfway around rim.

In blender (or using a muddling tool), combine watermelon cubes and remaining pinch Pico Piquin. Purée until smooth, about 10 seconds. Add lime juice, hibiscus concentrate, hot sauce, and Tajin sauce and stir until combined.

Fill prepared pilsner glass with ice cubes and pour in watermelon mixture. Top with beer, stir until combined, and garnish with watermelon slice.

Cook’s notes:•Pico Piquin seasoning is a variation on pico de gallo.
•Hibiscus concentrate is sometimes labeled as Jamaica concentrate.
•Tajin regular snack sauce is a chili sauce with lime and salt.

Shepard Fairey Paints 14 Story Mural in Paris

Shepard Fairey, artist and founder of the OBEY branding, is working on a large scale new project in Paris. Fairey worked with two assistants for three days on manlifts to complete the mural.

The painting spans 14 stories of a building at the corner of Jeanne d’Arc Street and Vincent Auriol Boulevard.

Ryan Adams Live After Deaf Box Set

Ryan Adams is releasing a monstrous box set of live acoustic songs in an epic box set being dubbed “Live After Deaf.” Why all the monstrous, epic talk? Well, the set consists of 144 tracks on 15 vinyl discs and an additional 74 tracks of digital only bonus tracks. Um, 218 tracks total.

According to Adams, the set will be available in Super Duper limited numbers at paxamrecords.com beginning 130 EST onFriday June 15. That is some wild news right there.

UPDATE:
At launch, the Pax Am servers crashed. The new on sale date for the box set is Monday June 18 at 4pm EDT.

UPDATE 06.18.12:

In a surprise to no one, the box sets are sold out. However, in related good news Pax Am is planning to now release a digital version of the box set without the extra tracks for people who missed out or prefer to have some shelf space. The digital version will be released after most of the vinyl product has shipped out.

The Live After Deaf box set is available on Amazon for $8.99! Check it out.

Google Plus Goes Local with Zagat and Places Goes Away

Google Plus has announced some great new features this morning. There is now a Local Tab in the redesigned homepage of Google Plus. This will take you to an interface where you can see Zagat reviews for places, reviews from top Google users and reviews from other people inside and outside of your networks.

The old Google Places is going away. Users will have the opportunity to move their reviews and ratings over from Google Places to Google Plus Local as well, so you will not lose anything there. One thing to note, however, is that you will not be able to use a nickname if you did before. The display name will be tied to your Google account being used for Google Plus. Additionally, you can selectively hide any reviews that you do not want to be public on the new Google Plus local when you migrate them over.

You current ratings will be converted from the former 5 star Google Places review mechanism to the 1-3 Zagat rating system. Conversion will be as follows 1-2 star reviews = 1 on Zagat; 3-4 star reviews = 2 on Zagat and 5 star reviews = 3 on Zagat. The goal is to get a more accurate picture of who is good and who is great in any given space. The 1-3 ratings for users are tallied and multiplied by 10 and give the business its Zagat rating on a 30 point scale on a variety of facets with 30 being a perfect score.

Look for the new Google Plus mobile app update along with this release that will allow you to view local within your Google Plus app and have quick access to all of the pertinent business information quickly and easily. Sounds like Yelp might actually have a little bit of competition coming their way in the local businesses reviews space.

DirecTV has just announced DirecTV Anywhere, a service that looks to rival Slingbox and similar products by offering streaming of DirecTV programming to your computer, tablet or phone. The provider has a substantial stable of shows available on the Everywhere service, but not everything qualifies. To check out what you can now watch anywhere, just look here.

Now, if you are simply interested in making darn sure that you don’t miss the game tonight or the next episode of some vampire love story show, DirecTV also has you covered. They have their guide online. You might already know this, but with paid TV service for the longest time that was a frustration. There never seemed to be a simple online guide available to check. Now there is. And it’s right here. It is in the /entertainment pages of the site that also house the DirecTV Everywhere info, so it very well could be new, and a welcome addition it is.

So, there you have it, you can now watch a lot of your favorite shows anywhere if you are a DirecTV customer, and you can also check in on your guide at anytime!

Intel Ivy Bridges Processors Explained

So, I am sure you have heard lots of talk about Ivy Bridges processors, and because you are hip and cool, you know they are awesome. But do you know why? Let’s take a look.

First off, how do you know it’s an Ivy Bridges processor? Intel is putting a 3 in front of all of their Ivy Bridges line. For example, the Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor . If it has a “Q” at the end of the name, it’s a mobile processor - Intel® Core™ i7-3720QM Processor . Look for dual core and ULV (ultra low voltage) processors coming soon. ULVs will be what you will find in your next-gen ultrabooks that could sport some awesome battery life.

Graphics also get a boost with the Ivy Bridges chips. The HD4000 and HD2500 on board graphics are on board with the new processors. “But integrated graphics are lamez!” No. Not since Sandy Bridges, and the HD4000 offer around 50% improvement over those. The HD2500 offers more modest 10-20% performance gains, so be aware of that. Note that these chips are built on a tiny 22nm architecture with 3D transistors, so they are prepped for the future.

Also, if you have a motherboard with LGA-1155 sockets, throw your Ivy Bridges chip in there. It will work.

Should you buy one? If you have Sandy Bridges processors in your machine, meh. If you have an earlier chip, go for Ivy Bridges if you are buying soon. Want to know when the chip you want will be available. Look at this chart:

Game of Thrones Claimants to the Iron Throne

As we dive into season 2 of Game of Thrones, characters seem to be emerging by the minute. Let’s take a look at who actually are the claimants to the throne and where they stand in the show right now. Looking at HBOs guide is helpful, but I am boiling it down here. Let’s start with the brothers…

Stannis Baratheon, brother of Renly Baratheon believes that Joffrey’s questionable heritage (possibly a bastard son) makes his claim to the throne valid. The Iron throne has been in the hands of a Baratheon since Robert seized the Iron Throne from the Mad King Aerys Targaryen.

Stannis’ brother, Renly, was killed by the Shadow, so his claim to the throne has been slightly derailed by that detail.

Joffrey Baratheon currently sits on the Iron Throne, although he is an insufferable twit. He inherited the throne upon the death of his father, Robert. However, there is much question about the validity of that claim, with many purporting that he is a bastard child of Robert.

Let’s look at the Targaryen claimant next. Now that Queen Daenerys Targaryen, the “Mother of Dragons” is out of the dessert, and it looks like her people are not going to die out there, she might still have a fighting chance. Daenerys stakes her claim to the throne on the fact that the Mad King Erys Targaryen, her father, held the throne prior to Robert Baratheon usurping him. She plans to user her dragons as a force to regain the throne - once they are grown of course.

This leaves Rob Stark, whose father Ned loyally served Robert as the Hand of the King before being beheaded after Joffrey took the throne following Robert’s death. Rob declared himself King in the North following his father’s execution and is seeking to take the Iron Throne for the sake of his father and for the protection of his family as they are now enemies of the Iron Throne.

Depending on who lives and dies, the claimants could change to include other members of any of these families, and let’s not forget Gendry, the one that got away during the mass murder of all Robert’s bastard children.

Track your status online with the dashboard system that syncs with your Basis Band. The band tracks how many calories you burn, monitor your heart rate, and learn how sleep and other activities affect those metrics.

It will be interesting to see how a device like this will stack up against the FuelBand offering that Nike announced.

Hollywood, California â December 16, 2011â The founding members of The Beach Boys, one of the world’s most legendary bands in popular music history, will reunite for a global 50th Anniversary CELEBRATION in 2012. Founded in Hawthorne, California in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the threeÂ teenaged WilsonÂ brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, andÂ school friend Al Jardine. In 1962, neighbor David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits on Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963,Â and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing records for the group. For five decades, America’s first pop band to reach the 50 year milestone has recorded and performed the music that has become the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer.

The Beach Boys continue to hold Billboard / Nielsen SoundScan’s record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits (36). ‘Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys’ is fast approaching triple-Platinum sales status, and ‘The SMiLE Sessions,’ released to worldwide critical acclaim in November, has been heralded as 2011’s #1 Reissue of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and recipients of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award, The Beach Boys are an American institution that is iconic around the world.

The Third Man 45 iPhone Case comes in a variety of options and features components made from 7” vinyl records from Third Man’s extensive catalog, all pressed at United Record Pressing in Nashville. There are also inserts available for sale for the case cut from the following vinyl records specifically. The White Stripes: “Candy Cane Children” single, The Raconteurs “Steady, as She Goes” first pressing vinyl single and The Dead Weather “Treat Me Like Your Mother” single.

To create The Third Man 45 iPhone Case for use with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, Griffin incorporated a genuine 7” vinyl record, pressed by United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN. The records were then die-cut to create the backs of each case. Rap Genius has put together with the help of anyone who wants to participate a stunning interactive map detailing most anything you would want to know about the histroy of map via locations. The microsite uses Google Maps technology to label key points where popular rappers live, locations that are mentioned in songs and other map-based rap trivia.

It lends a fascinating look at the geographical distribution of the rap music genre and of whre some of the most popular rappers around got inspiration for their rhymes. You can see places that Eminem put on the map in Detroit, and how just about everyone from 50 Cent, to Jay-Z to Notorious B.I.G. shout out to the Big Apple time and again.

Falcon Motorcycles

Ian Barry has been building motorcycles since he was 19 years old. He formed Falcon Motorcycles with Amaryllis Knight in 2007, to design unique machines without compromise, and build them around the engines of 10 iconic British Motorcycle engines.

This is Falcon’s intro to their company, and it gives you an idea about how unique this company really is. These pieces do not carry a price tag, as each one is individually crafted around the engine. These bikes, known as The Concept Ten, are going to be built once and only once. There will not be production runs of each model. Thus far, the company has completed work on two motorcycles, The Bullet Falcon and The Kestrel, and work on The Black has begun. The remaining bikes will be built in subsequent years and are available for purchase.

The Bullet Falcon took Ian a year to complete, and The Kestrel took a team of three a year to build. Falcon plans on building a single bike per year for The Concept Ten. The pedigree of the bike engines chosen is also very thought out and specific. The company has selected pre- or post-war British engines that carry with them a racing pedigree.Â The team will leverage CNC machining and rarified crafting techniques in a process that takes over 12,000 hours of work. With that much time and effort put into crafting these bikes, it is now wonder that they are truly a delight to behold. Let’s take a look at these beauties.
